What's the Broader Context?

Cafechurch is a part of a wider movement known, among other things, as the Emerging Church (or the alt.worship movement.). We aren't huge on the theory, really, and perhaps global definitions will always be a bit lacking, but we see it as trying to engage with the post-modern world in which we find ourselves. We're keen on stories, we're experimenting with spiritual practices (like fasting and church seasons), a bit of contemplative worship, and most important of all, we try not to take ourselves too seriously.

You can read a bit about that at www.emerginchurch.info. You could also check out The Ooze, and Next Wave Magazine to get a bit more of a picture of what the whole emerging scene is on about.

Otherwise, just google "emerging church" and see what you come up with. Don't believe the hype, don't let nay-sayers put you off.

Historically, Cafechurch was an initiative by Christian City Church Whitehorse, when the then Youth Pastor, Steve Venour, led a group of young adults in exploring new expressions of church. As time passed, the Cafechurch way of doing things became quite different from the CCC way, and we parted amicably.

We are now partnering with another emerging church called Solace EMC, who have a base in SPACE (an old Anglican Church) in Fairfield.
