One of the things which we try to do which is a little different is that we try to be as "horizontal" as possible. We are all in this together, and we are responsible for our own walks with God. We think that everyone has a contribution to make, and we can all benefit from hearing each others' stories. We don't think there should be a division between "leaders" and "followers." Some of us are devoting a little more time to it than others, but they need to be facilitators rather than experts.
People come from a wide variety of places, spiritually speaking, and we try to respect that. We hope to be a place where people can wrestle with what's real to them, and work through issues of faith and life and what it means to be a follower of Jesus today, in our culture.
We believe that it is natural - perhaps even beneficial - to have doubts, and the last thing that you need is to have the hard word pumped down your throat, or to be accused of backsliding, or being a nominal Christian or whatever. If I have doubts, I want them to be taken seriously.
We try to take community seriously. There is a real lack of community in the world, and it seems
to us that, as disciples of Jesus, we are all disciples together. We should be supporting one another.
Of course it is one thing to say it and another entirely to really practice it, but we try to prioritise it, to
the extent that one of our in jokes is our idea for a motto - "Cafechurch - We Talk About Stuff".
